A Grand European Adventure: From Swiss Serenity to Italian Delights
Zurich, Como, and Venice – these names now conjure a kaleidoscope of vivid memories from my recent Eurotrip, an adventure that was nothing short of incredible. For years, Italy had been at the top of my travel wishlist, a dream destination I yearned to explore. So, when my father announced his business trip to Zurich, Switzerland, I seized the opportunity. Begging him to let me tag along to explore both Switzerland and Italy, I was ecstatic when he complied. Little did I know, the journey ahead would unfold into a series of breathtaking landscapes, unforgettable culinary experiences, and moments that words can barely capture.
The Immaculate Charm of Zurich, Switzerland
Our journey began in Zurich, a city that immediately struck me with its profound beauty and efficiency. It’s easily one of the coolest and most gorgeous cities I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. The entire city operates with an almost utopian smoothness; everything is immaculate, orderly, and perfectly maintained. The tree-lined streets are a bustling tapestry of urban professionals and leisurely shoppers, all gracefully navigating the vibrant atmosphere. Iconic streets like Bahnhofstrasse beckon with their allure, housing world-renowned establishments such as the incredible Sprüngli and Lindt chocolate stores, alongside high-end, Rodeo Drive-esque boutiques.
All this urban elegance is set against the stunning backdrop of the sparkling Lake Zurich, its clear waters reflecting the city’s charm. Every turn offered a picturesque scene, from historic architecture to modern design seamlessly integrated into the urban fabric. I found myself wishing we had more time to simply wander, shop, and absorb the unique energy of Bahnhofstrasse. Zurich truly felt like a gem, a city where every detail contributed to an overall sense of refined beauty and serene living. It was an inspiring start to our European escapade, setting a high bar for the adventures that lay ahead.

Italy Beckons: Lake Como’s Tranquil Beauty and Culinary Indulgences
While Zurich captivated us, the allure of Italy was irresistible. My Dad and I rented a car and embarked on a scenic drive across the border to Cernobbio, a charming small town nestled right on the shores of Lake Como. The drive itself was an experience I believe everyone should witness at least once. Lush green landscapes unfolded before us, punctuated by dramatic cascading waterfalls and colossal boulders. Quaint country houses, seemingly plucked from a fairytale, were tucked harmoniously into the rolling countryside. It was during this drive that I mused about the possibility of living in such serene isolation, if it meant being surrounded by such exquisitely beautiful nature.
Upon arriving in Italy, we were once again struck by the profound beauty of our surroundings. Lake Como is an iconic destination for a reason, its azure waters reflecting the elegant villas and verdant hills that encircle it. Our stay at the magnificent Villa D’Este was nothing short of luxurious. This historic hotel, with its opulent gardens and stunning lake views, offered a perfect retreat. Our days were spent in glorious relaxation: reading under the warm Italian sun, lounging by the famous floating pool – a truly unique and refreshing experience – and, of course, eating. Oh, how we ate! I honestly believe I consumed so many Caprese salads that I’m surprised I wasn’t metaphorically bleeding tomatoes and sweating mozzarella. Every lunch and dinner was a lavish three-course affair, each dish bursting with the traditional, vibrant flavors of Italy. We were, without exaggeration, in food heaven.
We also took a memorable boat trip across the lake to the enchanting town of Bellagio, often called the “Pearl of Lake Como.” Exploring its narrow cobblestone streets, vibrant shops, and enjoying panoramic views of the lake from its picturesque promenades was a highlight. The true Bellagio, just as magical as its reputation suggests, truly immersed us in the timeless romance of Lake Como.
Venice: A Surreal Labyrinth and the Dawn of a Gelato Obsession
Our final destination, Venice, presented an experience unlike any other city in the world. It was a whirlwind of crowds, heat, surreal beauty, and undeniable charm. Venice is truly a place that defies full capture in photographs or written descriptions; it demands to be experienced firsthand, to be walked through, navigated, and absorbed with every sense. We spent our days exploring its labyrinthine alleys, marveling at its historic architecture, indulging in local shopping, and immersing ourselves in the rich Venetian culture. A highlight was our visit to Murano, where we witnessed the mesmerizing art of glass blowing – a craft that appeared terribly difficult and incredibly hot, yet resulted in exquisite, delicate masterpieces.
We wandered in and out of ancient churches and grand palaces, each telling a story of centuries past. But, as with Lake Como, food once again dominated our Venetian itinerary. We savored numerous incredible meals, each dish a work of art, some of the most beautifully designed plates I’ve ever encountered. One culinary surprise was a deconstructed Caprese salad for dessert: basil ice cream, thinly sliced cherry tomatoes, and a delicate mozzarella cream. It was surprisingly delicious, an unexpected fusion of savory and sweet that perfectly encapsulated Italy’s innovative spirit.
However, amidst all these gastronomic delights, one sweet treat truly stole my heart and became a ritual: gelato. Oh boy, the gelato! It became our tradition to enjoy gelato after every single meal. With traditional gelaterias seemingly on every corner and tucked into every hidden alleyway, resisting was simply an impossible feat. My dad, ever loyal to his favorites, consistently chose chocolate, but I ventured into a multitude of flavors. I remember one particular flavor that was an absolute revelation – I’ve forgotten its Italian name, but it involved meringue and white chocolate, a combination that tasted like pure heaven. Yet, through all my delightful explorations, my ultimate favorite remained the coffee gelato. It was exceptionally light, unbelievably creamy, and so intensely flavorful that I honestly felt I could have consumed gallons of it. Its rich espresso notes, perfectly balanced with a subtle sweetness, left an indelible mark on my palate. Upon returning home, I knew I had to recreate that sublime experience.
Recreating the Dream: My Homemade Coffee Gelato Recipe
The quest to replicate that perfect Italian coffee gelato was a delightful challenge. While achieving the exact texture of authentic Italian gelato at home without a professional gelato maker can be tricky – that distinct density and slow melt are hard to nail – I was incredibly successful with the flavor profile! My homemade version boasts a wonderfully strong coffee flavor, yet it’s beautifully balanced by the underlying sweetness of the creamy gelato base. Without sounding immodest, I truly believe the flavor is almost identical to the coffee gelato I enjoyed in most of the gelaterias across Italy. It was a rewarding accomplishment, making the entire journey even more memorable!
Beyond its incredible taste, this recipe is surprisingly easy to make. Even when I accidentally curdled the custard during one attempt (oops!), it came back together perfectly with a quick blitz from an immersion blender. Don’t be intimidated by the process; the steps are straightforward and the reward is truly magnificent. I wholeheartedly encourage you to try this recipe. It’s more than just a dessert; it’s an invitation to bring a piece of Italy’s sweet, caffeinated charm right into your own kitchen. Prepare to be transported!

Homemade Italian Coffee Gelato
Recipe by Rachel Conners
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ⅓ cup sugar, plus 1/4 cup extra
- 4 egg yolks
- 4 shots espresso (freshly brewed and cooled slightly)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and the initial ⅓ cup of sugar. Heat over medium flame, stirring occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves, which should take approximately 5 minutes. Do not boil.
- While the milk mixture heats, prepare the egg yolks. In a separate medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks together with the remaining ¼ cup of sugar using an electric mixer. Continue whipping until the mixture becomes noticeably thick and pale yellow in color, usually around 4 minutes.
- Carefully temper the egg mixture. Gradually pour about ½ cup of the warm milk and cream mixture into the whipped egg yolks, stirring continuously to prevent scrambling. This slowly raises the temperature of the eggs.
- Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk and cream. Cook over very low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of the spoon, typically 7 to 10 minutes. (Tip: If the mixture accidentally curdles, don’t despair! Simply use an immersion blender, food processor, or standard blender to quickly blend it back to a smooth consistency. It will be perfectly fine!)
- Remove the custard from the heat. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a clean medium bowl and pour the warm custard mixture through the strainer to ensure a silky-smooth texture. Stir in the freshly brewed espresso until thoroughly combined.
- Allow the gelato mixture to chill completely in the refrigerator, ideally for at least 4 hours or overnight. A well-chilled base is crucial for the best results.
- Once completely chilled, pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for freezing. The churning process will transform it into a smooth, creamy gelato.
- For the best texture, transfer the freshly churned gelato to an airtight container and freeze for an additional 2-3 hours to firm up before serving.
We hope you enjoy this homemade taste of Italy!
