San Diego’s Top Healthy Food & Drink Destinations

San Diego is a paradise for healthy eaters, offering an incredible array of options that cater to every dietary need. From vibrant vegan eateries to gluten-free bakeries and paleo-friendly cafes, the city truly has it all. Here’s a detailed look at my absolute favorite spots to savor delicious and nourishing meals.

Eve Encinitas (100% Vegan & GF Friendly) – View Menu

Stepping into Eve Encinitas feels like entering a tranquil sanctuary. Beyond its incredibly delicious food, the ambiance alone is reason enough to visit, with lush plants and an overwhelmingly positive, soothing vibe. This establishment is 100% vegan, specializing in creatively crafted Buddha Bowls that are as flavorful as they are nourishing. My personal favorites include the Legendary Hero Bowl, the Havana Bowl, and the Aphrodite Bowl, each bursting with unique ingredients and textures. Their flatbreads, all naturally gluten-free, are also a must-try – especially the truffled mushroom, which offers a rich, earthy flavor. Don’t leave without exploring their dessert case, filled with decadent, mostly raw and entirely gluten-free treats that are surprisingly rich. The vibrant neighborhood surrounding Eve also invites exploration, so carve out some time to wander the charming streets of Encinitas. Keep an eye on their online schedule, as Eve frequently hosts enriching events in their back room.

Trilogy Sanctuary in La Jolla (Gluten-Free & Vegan Paradise) – View Menu

Trilogy Sanctuary is more than just a cafe; it’s a magical oasis combining a yoga studio, an event space, and an exceptional gluten-free and vegan cafe. Finding it is part of the adventure – you’ll enter an unassuming building in La Jolla, take the elevator to the top floor, and emerge onto a breathtaking rooftop deck. Here, amidst aerial yoga setups and panoramic views, you’ll discover a charming shop offering crystals and unique apparel, alongside their truly superb cafe. The raw carrot cake is a revelation, and their ravioli and Caesar salad are absolute personal favorites. My dad, a devoted fan, can’t resist their “cheeze” burger, which he finds utterly addictive. Their extensive menu also features fantastic bowls, smoothies, and açaí bowls, making Trilogy a truly unique and cherished dining experience.

Cafe Gratitude in Little Italy (Entirely Vegan with Abundant GF Options) – View Menu

Cafe Gratitude in Little Italy is consistently one of my top picks, and I confess, I’m a creature of habit when I visit. This establishment is entirely vegan, with the vast majority of its menu also being gluten-free. Their beverage selection and desserts, many of which are raw, are equally impressive. For breakfast, my usual order is the fluffy flax pancakes served with fresh berries and coconut cream, perfectly paired with a creamy matcha latte. If I’m dining for dinner, the Whole Bowl (pictured below) is my go-to, and if I have someone to share with, we always indulge in their Buffalo Cauliflower – it’s absolutely phenomenal and a dish I crave regularly.

San Diego Guide - Cafe Gratitude, Little Italy. Whole Bowl & Buffalo Cauliflower.

Project Juice in Hillcrest (Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free Powerhouse) – View Menu

Conveniently located within walking distance of my home, Project Juice is my ultimate destination for revitalizing juices, creamy smoothies, and nutrient-dense açaí and pitaya bowls. Their açaí bowls offer diverse topping choices, including a fantastic all-paleo option that adds a wonderfully satisfying crunch. Beyond bowls, their gluten-free toasts are exceptional – I particularly love the almond butter banana toast, with a personal preference for swapping out the bananas for fresh strawberries. For a truly indulgent yet healthy treat, the Strawberry Maca smoothie is a must-try; its creamy texture and rich flavor evoke the nostalgic taste of a strawberry milkshake.

Red House Pizza in University Heights (GF & Vegan Pizza Perfection) – View Menu

Red House Pizza stands out for one incredible reason: it’s a pizza place that boasts an entire dedicated vegan menu. We’re not talking about simple vegan cheese substitutions; this is a full lineup of pizzas thoughtfully crafted to be vegan, featuring innovative vegan white sauces, plant-based “meats,” and creamy vegan cheeses. Their commitment to inclusive dining extends to an excellent gluten-free crust, a variety of gluten-free pasta dishes, and even gluten-free meatballs, allowing for a fully customized, delicious pizza experience for those with dietary restrictions. When I’m craving pizza, Red House is always my first and only choice. My personal go-to is the “Little Rock” pizza – it might sound unconventional, but its flavor profile is beyond delicious. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any selection from their menu; I have yet to be disappointed by a meal here.

Plumeria Vegetarian in University Heights & Encinitas (Vegetarian with GF & Vegan Options) – View Menu

Plumeria Vegetarian is another one of my frequent take-out choices, though dining in is equally delightful. Their fresh spring rolls are always a hit, as are the savory pad se ew and the perfectly seasoned garlic edamame. The Zen Soup is a unique standout, offering a hearty and distinctive flavor profile that sets it apart. A special highlight at the University Heights location is their tangerine chicken – a gluten-free and vegan marvel that incredibly mimics the taste of Panda Express orange chicken. It’s one of the few instances where I wholeheartedly embrace meat substitutes because it’s just that good! This spot consistently impresses even my meat-eating friends, proving that vegetarian cuisine can be universally appealing.

Jyoti Bihanga Vegetarian in Normal Heights (Serene Vegetarian Dining) – View Menu

Located conveniently near my yoga studio, Pilgrimage of the Heart, Jyoti Bihanga is a vegetarian restaurant offering deliciously comforting food in a wonderfully casual and serene setting. It’s a frequent stop for me after class. I particularly adore the Yoga Bowl and the Rama Bowl, both packed with wholesome ingredients. While I haven’t personally tried it, the Neatloaf consistently receives rave reviews from my dining companions. The soup of the day is always a flavorful surprise, and they often feature a remarkably tasty raw cheesecake for dessert, providing a perfect end to a nourishing meal.

Flower Child in Del Mar (Quick & Healthy Modern Eatery) – View Menu

Flower Child in Del Mar is my go-to for a fast, healthy, and incredibly satisfying meal. The restaurant is spacious, ensuring ample seating even during peak hours, and its super cute, bohemian-inspired decor adds to the pleasant dining experience. This spot is excellent for all diners, whether you’re strictly gluten-free, vegan, or simply looking for fresh, wholesome options. It operates on a casual, order-at-the-counter model, making it ideal for a relaxed lunch or a quick dinner. My top recommendations include the vibrant Chopped Vegetable Salad, the Organic Kale Salad (minus the cheese for a vegan option), and the Mother Earth Bowl (I always substitute brown rice or quinoa for the grains to keep it gluten-free). The Forbidden Rice Bowl is also a fantastic choice. For sides, I absolutely cannot get enough of their Spicy Japanese Eggplant. In the photo below, I’m enjoying the Kale Salad (cheese-free, after a quick return of the original version that unfortunately came with Parmesan) alongside their Heirloom Tomato Toast, which I also opt for without cheese.

Beaming Juice Bar in Del Mar, La Jolla + La Costa (Premium GF & Vegan Goodness) – View Menu

Beaming Juice Bar is another stellar option for high-quality, nutritious beverages and food. While it leans towards the pricier side, every item is crafted with premium ingredients, and the smoothies, juices, and meals are consistently incredible. The Bluephoria smoothie is a personal favorite, as are their Overnight Oats. I’ve explored a significant portion of their menu, and everything I’ve tried has been exceptional. Their açaí bowls are also outstanding; if you have the time to dine in, I highly recommend it, as they serve them in generously sized bowls. For something warm and comforting, their rotating warm soup bowls are fantastic – always featuring quinoa and cashews, they offer a wonderfully warming and delicious option when you’re in the mood for it.

Healthy Creations in Encinitas (OG Gluten-Free, Paleo & Vegan Friendly) – View Menu

Healthy Creations holds a special place as one of San Diego’s original healthy cafes. Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, it’s a treasure trove of paleo and vegan options. The entire menu is 100% gluten-free, catering to breakfast and lunch crowds. For dinner, be sure to visit their sister restaurant, Nectarine Grove (details below). Their waffles are simply divine for breakfast, and you can even pick up a frozen pack to enjoy at home – a highly recommended convenience! For lunch, the Falafel & Hummus, available as a salad or wrap, is a consistently satisfying choice. Every panini I’ve sampled has also been excellent. If you fall in love with their bread, you can also purchase loaves from their freezer case; the millet rolls and rosemary bread are particular favorites of mine, and I rarely leave without one or the other.

Nectarine Grove in Leucadia (Wholesome GF, Paleo & Vegan-Friendly Dining) – View Menu

Though a relatively recent addition to San Diego’s dining scene, Nectarine Grove quickly ascended to become one of my absolute favorite restaurants. Owned by the same visionary team behind Healthy Creations (mentioned above), this spot maintains the same high standards for clean eating. The entire restaurant is gluten-free, with every dish crafted from wholesome ingredients. It’s predominantly paleo-friendly and boasts an impressive array of vegan options. My ultimate go-to is the Pesto Pizza with vegan cheese; I always request it “well done” to achieve that perfect crispy-on-the-bottom crust. What truly sets them apart is their vegan cheese – it tastes incredibly fresh, as if made in-house, rather than the often artificial-tasting alternatives. Their Roasted Veggie Bowl is another exceptional choice. To drink, I typically opt for an iced matcha with house-made almond milk or a refreshing Bambucha Kombucha, which is one of my favorite kombucha brands. For those who enjoy a richer coffee experience, they also offer Bulletproof-style coffees.

True Food Kitchen at UTC and Fashion Valley Malls (Health-Conscious Mall Dining) – View Menu

If you find yourself at either Fashion Valley Mall or UTC Mall, make a beeline for True Food Kitchen. This restaurant offers a plethora of healthy options, ensuring there’s something delicious for everyone. It’s my preferred spot when dining with friends who may not be as health-conscious, as it consistently satisfies all palates. You must try their cauliflower starter – I could honestly devour the entire dish by myself, and often have (see picture below). The Butternut Squash Pizza on a gluten-free crust (again, ask for it well done for optimal crispness) and the Seasonal Ingredient Salad (without cheese) are also fantastic choices. For a sweet finish, both the squash pie and chia pudding desserts are delightfully delicious.

Naked Cafe in Solana Beach (Ocean View Dining with Healthy Comforts) – View Menu

Naked Cafe has been a beloved family favorite since my childhood. While there are now multiple locations across San Diego, the Solana Beach spot by Fletcher’s Cove Beach remains my absolute favorite, largely due to its stunning ocean views. My standing order is the refreshing Baby Reds and Greens salad. In my meat-eating days, I absolutely adored the Dual Delight with its flavorful coconut rice. For breakfast, their whole grain pancakes, available in a delicious gluten-free version, are also a fantastic choice, making for a perfect start to a day by the beach.

Claire’s on Cedros in Solana Beach (Heartfelt & Delicious Cafe) – View Menu

Claire’s on Cedros holds a deeply sentimental spot in my heart. Not only have I known Claire, the owner, for most of my life (and she significantly inspired my childhood baking passion), but working in Claire’s bakery was also my very first job. The food here is consistently amazing, prepared with evident love and care by the entire team. While it might not be the strictly healthiest spot on this list, they offer a commendable selection of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. For breakfast, the Clairecakes, especially the gluten-free version, are simply unbeatable. Since high school, one of my unwavering favorites has been the fried green tomato sandwich – truly exceptional. And before you leave, make sure to grab a treat from their incredible bakery!

Donna Jean in Banker’s Hill (Gourmet Vegan with Unbeatable Mac & Cheese) – View Menu

Donna Jean is a more recent discovery for me, but what a fantastic find it is! This restaurant is 100% vegan and offers a distinctly gourmet plant-based dining experience. They create some truly incredible dishes and pizzas. I am utterly smitten with their vegan gluten-free macaroni and cheese – it is, without exaggeration, the best vegan mac and cheese I have ever tasted anywhere. Their pizza menu is also delicious, available with a regular crust or a gluten-free socca crust. For sides, the cauliflower and truffled potatoes are excellent complements to any meal. BONUS: Donna Jean is conveniently located next to Evolution, a more casual but equally tasty vegan burger joint, perfect for a different kind of plant-based craving.

Tribute Pizza in North Park (GF & Vegan Pizza Innovation) – View Menu

Tribute Pizza, housed in a former post office in North Park, might seem like a standard pizza place at first glance. However, it earns its place on this list for two remarkable reasons: their incredible gluten-free pizza crusts and a truly extraordinary vegan pizza (pictured below). This masterpiece features a unique beet puree base, a delightful blend of almond and hazelnut ricotta, and an assortment of other delicious toppings. This single vegan pizza alone is the reason I wholeheartedly recommend this spot. While I haven’t explored the rest of their menu extensively, if you’re in the North Park area and craving an exceptional vegan pizza, this is an absolute must-try.

San Diego Guide - Tribute Pizza, North Park

Good On Ya in Encinitas (Organic, GF-Friendly Eatery) – View Menu

Though I’ve only visited Good On Ya a handful of times, its commitment to organic, gluten-free friendly dining makes it a crucial inclusion. My usual order here is the flavorful Thai Salad, but the sandwiches consistently garner rave reviews from my dining companions. They also offer burritos that are generally much healthier than typical Mexican options, and a taco plate featuring delicious Siete grain-free tortillas. For breakfast or a light snack, their coconut yogurt parfait, made with my favorite locally produced coconut yogurt from Edible Alchemy, is an absolute treat.

Holy Matcha in North Park (Instagrammable Matcha & GF Vegan Delights)

Holy Matcha is a visual delight, boasting a stunning pink and green aesthetic adorned with abundant plants, creating an incredibly cute and Instagrammable atmosphere. Beyond its photogenic appeal, the drinks are absolutely delicious, albeit a bit on the pricier side. My go-to is the iced strawberry matcha with coconut milk, crafted with freshly pureed strawberries for a wonderfully refreshing taste. I’ve also indulged in their gluten-free vegan waffles, which are not only incredibly delicious but also strikingly beautiful, topped with edible flowers. The gluten-free vegan donuts are equally impressive. I believe all their food offerings are vegan and gluten-free, with the exception of their toast options, making it a fantastic spot for those with dietary preferences.

San Diego Guide - Holy Matcha, Waffles & Matcha Latte

Communal Coffee in North Park (Charming Cafe & Co-working Spot) – View Menu

Communal Coffee is a wonderfully charming spot perfect for catching up with friends or getting some work done, though it can get quite busy! Located just off University Avenue in Hillcrest, it shares its space with North Park Nursery, offering the delightful option of browsing plants after grabbing your drink. The Lavender Honey Latte is exceptionally delicious, and they also craft a superb Matcha Latte. Their Lavender Grey Tea is also incredibly tasty and soothing. While I haven’t personally sampled their food menu, everything looks beautifully presented, and I know they offer several gluten-free options, making it a great choice for a light bite.

Meraki Cafe in University Heights (Cozy Coffee Shop with Diverse Menu) – View Menu

I simply had to include Meraki Cafe, as I’m currently enjoying a delicious matcha here as I write this! While I can only personally vouch for their drinks, they boast a surprisingly extensive food menu for a coffee shop. Their offerings include delectable locally made empanadas (yes, even a vegan version – swoon!), a variety of sandwiches, healthy snacks, refreshing açaí bowls, and invigorating smoothies. Meraki also features an adorable patio that’s perfect for relaxing, and it’s completely dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for the experience.
